- HB4429 designates the part of U.S.
- The Texas Department of Transportation must design and install identifying markers at both ends and appropriate intermediate locations, subject to the funding condition in Transportation Code Section 225.021(c): the department may not design, construct or erect the markers unless a grant or donation covers those costs.
- The act was signed June 20, 2025, and took effect September 1, 2025.
What does it do?
HB4429 designates the part of U.S. Highway 281 in Blanco and Burnet Counties between State Highway 71 and Ranch Road 962 as the Muckleroy Family Memorial Highway. The name is additional to any other designation; it does not replace the highway’s route number.
The Texas Department of Transportation must design and install identifying markers at both ends and appropriate intermediate locations, subject to the funding condition in Transportation Code Section 225.021(c): the department may not design, construct or erect the markers unless a grant or donation covers those costs. The existing section separately addresses marker repair, replacement and maintenance.
The act was signed June 20, 2025, and took effect September 1, 2025. It also directs statutory renumbering to avoid duplicate section numbers. It does not build a new highway or change traffic rules.
What changed along the way?
The introduced bill and House committee text used “Muckleroy Memorial Highway.” The sole indexed amendment, offered by McQueeney and adopted May 10, added “Family” in the section heading, designation and marker language. All three amendment instructions survive in the final law.
The engrossed text also renumbered the added section from 225.243 to 225.259; that is separate from the amendment’s three wording instructions. The engrossed, Senate committee and enrolled operative texts match. The text index and history record the remaining passage steps without another substantive change.

Who could benefit—and who could bear the costs?
The designation provides a public memorial to the Muckleroy family. A grant or donor must cover initial marker design, construction and installation before that work proceeds; the act does not specify a dollar amount or guarantee that funding has been received.
The latest listed fiscal note, on the engrossed bill, anticipated no significant state fiscal impact, assumed costs could be absorbed with existing resources, and anticipated no local-government fiscal implication.
Review boundary: This explains the designation, amendment and funding condition. It does not confirm that markers have been installed or make separate claims about the family’s biography.
